IBM Tivoli Storage Manager

RackForce's Enterprise Backup & Archive Solution

IBM Tivoli

Let us introduce you to the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. Tivoli is an award winning enterprise backup solution. RackForce's IBM Tivoli Storage Manager provides a centralized backup, archive, and management and data recovery solution at the fingertips of all of RackForce customers. From a single VPS to a rack of servers, all are able to benefit from RackForce's enterprise level backup solution. Leveraging an IBM SAN and LTO 4 Tape infrastructure, RackForce's TSM backup solution backs up to disk then moves the data to tape with smart data store technology. TSM is fully automated and its centralized policy management system allows you to dictate how your backups and archives are automated. RackForce's backup system is enterprise level fast, safe, secure, and reliable.

Why is RackForce's Backup & Archive System Better?

  • IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager is regarded as one of the world's leading enterprise level backup/archive systems.
  • VPS, Dynamic Dedicated Server, or dedicated servers including multiple server combinations can do file Backups and Archives
    • This includes database and email servers with a "live" storage option (no downtime), web, application and other servers.
  • Now all customers at RackForce have "their own" enterprise level backup system. Everyone gains from RackForce's economy of scale
  • Provides the fastest possible and most reliable recovery from disk drive failures, data errors, and accidental data deletions
    • Automates active online data transfer to offline storage for minimal application interruption
    • Restores from any previously backed-up version.
    • Client-controlled data-restores and archive-retrieves so you are in control of your data vs. waiting for help
  • Offers centralized management for data backup, archive, data-vaulting and disaster preparation
    • Increases efficiency by centralizing Backup and Archival, assisting with data-vaulting, disaster preparation and management procedures.
    • Supports centralized management for any number of computers running on multiple operating systems
    • Protects Operating systems including and not limited to: AIX, HP Unix, Linux, Sun Unix, Windows, z/OS
    • Streamlines policy management by providing automated, user-defined, policy-based backup, archive and disaster preparation and recovery
  • Leveraging on RackForce IBM storage area network (SAN) and LTO 4 Tape infrastructure
    • Uses fiber channel with 4700 disk arrays.
    • Can be expanded to hundreds of Terabytes of storage (and more as technology permits).
  • Accessible 24/7/365 with phone and Customer Support Center assistance jointly available

Terms of Reference

  • Archive - a static one time storage of a file saved on a strict time limit. Through the customer GUI you choose how long to store the file(s); for one week, one month, 6 months, one year or forever (technically up to 82 years). If the length of time selected has expired then the file expires and is deleted. If you choose only one file and it is stored for only one week, you are billed for the size of that file at the Archive Rate of $0.50/GB overage. Whether one file or many, no matter how long the file(s) are chosen to be stored, we look up the customer Archive usage on a daily basis for monthly billing. Therefore you may have a day where a large file is stored but if that file is quickly deleted by you then there is no charge. This allows a mistake to be made by you with no penalty.
  • Back-up - are files stored with changed or "differential" data backed-up as a snap-shot or "version". A version is created automatically by TSM on a daily basis but only if there is differential data to be backed-up. Back-ups are set up by default with the following policy: 14 back-up versions stored for 31 days. If a file changes then TSM automatically stores the new version on the next daily cycle. There is a limit of 14 versions so the oldest file, say file #15, is "expired" (deleted) and replaced with file #1. The Back-up Rate is $2/GB overage.
